The workshop will start with an exploratory walk around the gardens looking at various seed heads, discussing the shapes of the seed pods and how to dry and store them.

In an interactive way, children will be led to discover the magic of seeds, how they are like a tiny parcel containing everything a new plant needs to start growing, but also the requirements that a seed needs to grow.

Then, choosing from a selection of OmVed wildflower seeds, the kids will blend their own wildflower meadow seed packets. We will set about custom designing and naming our seed packets, which will contain information about the time of year to sow and the conditions the seeds will require to grow.

The kids will try a variety of mark making on their seed packets from drawing the seeds, to colouring in, printing and painting. Finally the kids will take home a selection of seed packets to give away as gifts or to start their own wildflower meadow at home.

About OmVed Gardens:

Since 2017, we have been carefully restoring a previously tarmacked land in Highgate Village, north London, to provide a space to explore food, creativity and ecology for health and climate resilience.

We are a community interest company featuring a permaculture garden, a creative zero-waste kitchen and a growing educational, events and exhibition space. Our aims are to realise our deep entwinement with each other and the more-than-human, through thinking around food, gardening and ecological awareness, to improve diversity at all levels (seed, food, species, participation) and to use creativity and nature-led knowledge to help tackle the climate emergency.
