Nestled within the gardens, our new Groundfridge is a first of its kind in the UK, a revolutionary return to an old idea. Long before electricity, people relied on root cellars to keep their produce fresh, and the Groundfridge revives this wisdom in a beautifully modern form. Using the natural insulating qualities of the earth, it naturally maintains a temperature of between 8 and 15 degrees, with a solar-powered ventilator helping to regulate the temperature - meaning the whole system runs entirely free of mains electricity.
Planting around it provides insulation in winter and a cooling effect in summer, meaning the denser the vegetation grows, the more effective it becomes. We're excited to watch the new planting mature.
