Garden Tips

Snowdrops are popping up in the garden. OmVed Gardens’ landscape gardener John has some fascinating snowdrop facts and planting tips.

Snowdrops are one of the first flowers to bloom in late winter or early spring, often pushing through snow-covered ground. They are a welcome sight at OmVed Gardens symbolising new beginnings and the arrival of spring.

Here are a few interesting facts about them:

Galanthus is the genus name, which means “milk flower” in Greek.

Snowdrops attract early pollinators such as bees when few other plants are in bloom.

Snowdrops are native to Europe and the Middle East but have naturalized in many parts of the world.

Snowdrops have antifreeze proteins in their cells, allowing them to survive harsh winter conditions.
